When a car will not start, first distinguish no response, slow cranking and normal cranking without the engine firing. Those symptoms lead to different checks.
No response or clicking
Confirm the selector is in Park or Neutral as required, press the brake or clutch fully and check for an immobiliser or key message. Dim lights or repeated clicking can suggest low 12 V power, but do not prove the battery is the only cause. Use the manual’s spare-key or emergency-key procedure if appropriate.
Cranks normally but does not start
Check the fuel indication and dashboard messages. Do not repeatedly crank for long periods or spray improvised starting fluids. Fuel delivery, ignition, sensors and other faults need diagnosis. Record whether the problem began after refuelling, repairs or a long period parked.
EV and hybrid checks
A quiet car may already be ready: check its READY indicator. A charged traction battery does not guarantee a healthy 12 V system. Follow the model’s procedure and never access high-voltage parts. Stop attempts for smoke, fuel smell, leakage or overheating and request assistance.
