So much has already been written about CVs in the literature that it is difficult to write the right content for it. Nevertheless, there are a number of core elements that you absolutely must not overlook. Keep in mind that a recruiter or HR manager does not spend too much time on your CV and cover letter. You therefore need to be able to make an immediate impression. Hence the advice below.
Honesty
There is a saying: “Honesty is the best policy.” That is certainly true, especially for those who have inflated their CVs too much. Those who have tried to make it look too good and present themselves as better than they are. That is strongly discouraged. Just be honest. You can exaggerate slightly, but do not stray from the truth. By asking questions, conducting reference checks, and performing background checks, you run the risk of being found out. In that case, the job will definitely pass you by.
Empathy
Naturally, your CV contains the entire history of your career. Structure it so that it builds towards the position you are applying for. What you have done in the past must now serve as the foundation for the new position. While the company is interested in your experience, they are looking for someone with experience that aligns with the position they are seeking. Therefore, focus on the company.
Content structure
I still see too often that a chronological order is used regarding employers, positions, and experience. People start with the first employer and continue up to the current employer. The sum total of this may be interesting, but the recruiter or HR manager is looking for someone who fits a specific role. Therefore, reversing the chronological order gives the recruiter or HR manager immediate insight.
By the way, describe the companies where you have worked in one or two lines. More lines, and certainly if it concerns more than a few companies, leads to irritation.
The responsibilities can be described in two or three lines. This is important for the assessment of you as a candidate.
Furthermore, it is inadvisable to embellish the CV with graphs, photos, and colors. Using colors might be acceptable, provided it is done modestly. For example, to highlight the titles of the segments.
Stand out
Recruiters and HR managers typically receive multiple CVs. It takes them too much time to read and evaluate them all from start to finish. Research has shown that they decide within the first 15 seconds whether you will make it to the second round. It is therefore extremely important that you immediately highlight the right elements in your cover letter and CV to pique the reader’s interest. They look for a number of characteristics, such as:
- current position;
- titles;
- companies;
- your positioning;
- desired position;
- motivation.
If the factors stand out immediately, you increase your chances for a second round.
Choice of words
This subject is always a bit overlooked, even though you are quickly judged on it. If you use outdated words, it creates a different first impression compared to using common words.
Update
No matter how good your CV is, reference checks and background checks will still take place. Therefore, ensure that all online resources such as LinkedIn, your blog, etc., align exactly with your CV. A discrepancy can easily become grounds for exclusion.
Personality
Personality is always an important aspect in all situations, including job applications. However, the recruiter or HR manager does not know you. Your CV and accompanying cover letter must demonstrate whether your personality fits their company culture. Gather as much information as possible about that company and use it.
Scanability
Someone from the HR department is tasked with scanning the internet for a number of keywords. The goal is to locate candidates for a specific position. It is therefore of great importance to pay attention to including keywords that align with the company’s search criteria. In doing so, it is helpful to use a neutral font, avoid italics and underlining, and refrain from inserting boxes.
