Digital advertising is the paid-media part of digital marketing. Buying a search ad, sponsored placement or social advertisement is advertising. Digital marketing also includes the website, organic content, email relationships, analytics, customer experience and retention. Advertising is one way to distribute an offer within that broader work.
Compare the responsibilities
| Question | Digital advertising | Broader digital marketing |
|---|---|---|
| What is being planned? | Paid audience access, creative, bids and placements | Audience, offer, channels, experience and customer relationship |
| What costs matter? | Media, creative, management and measurement | Those costs plus website, content, systems and ongoing service work |
| What remains after spending stops? | Purchased distribution generally stops when the campaign stops. | Owned content and customer-support resources can remain available. |
| What shows success? | Suitable outcomes relative to campaign cost | Business outcomes across acquisition, delivery and retention |
Example: advertising a training course
A fictional course provider pays to promote an upcoming session. The ad is digital advertising. Researching the audience, writing the course page, explaining prerequisites, handling bookings and helping attendees prepare are digital marketing activities around it. A good ad cannot compensate for a broken checkout or unclear course requirements.
When does paid distribution make sense?
Consider a bounded test when the offer is clear, the response route works and the cost of a suitable customer can be evaluated. Define the spending limit before launch. Paid traffic can produce data quickly once a campaign runs, but that does not guarantee profitable demand or a representative sample.
If enquiries fail because the product description is incomplete, repair that page first. If there is no capacity to deliver, increasing reach is premature. If the offer works but reaches too few suitable people, paid distribution may be one option to test.
Avoid misleading budget comparisons
Compare like with like. An advertising report containing only media spend cannot be compared fairly with a content budget containing staff hours, design and software. State which costs are included and follow the same customers through the relevant buying period. Keep revenue return separate from profit.
