There are two types of CVs: a chronological and a functional one. In the chronological CV, which is the most common, you list your work experience and education in chronological order, with the most recent at the beginning and working your way back. The functional CV, which is less common, has a different approach. It focuses on your competencies (knowledge and skills).
Why would you choose a functional CV?
That depends on your situation. If you are a recent graduate with little or no work experience, you have little to report chronologically. You will need to shift the focus, and that is where the functional CV comes into play. This also applies if you are making a career switch or have been unemployed for a long period.
What does a functional CV consist of?
In principle, with name, address, postal code, city, mobile phone number, and date of birth. Without this information, the recruiter cannot verify anything. And you must be permanently contactable.
State the position you are applying for. If it is an unsolicited application, mention the intended position. Specifically indicate your motivation for the position.
Education and courses you have completed or are currently taking are an important part. List them in chronological order, starting with the highest achieved and working backward, with the year in which a diploma or certificate was obtained and a mention thereof.
Competencies are of great interest to a company. What knowledge and (technical) skills do you possess? This is where the tension lies. You list your competencies and describe concretely how you apply them. For every knowledge component and skill component, the explanation must be concise and to the point. Neither of these components need to be work-related. This can also be described in your private life, such as volunteer work. However, always be honest in your descriptions so that they are measurable afterwards.
Achievements in the workplace and/or private sphere are highly valued. Which milestones, goals, and accomplishments have you successfully achieved? Or which publications do you have to your credit? Publications are extremely important, because people are sure to search for them.
