The price of a replacement car battery includes more than the battery itself: testing, fitting, possible registration and disposal can change the total. First distinguish a 12-volt battery from an EV traction battery.
Ask for an itemised quote
Request the exact battery model, technology, capacity and warranty, plus labour, diagnostic testing, registration and taxes. Ask whether a refundable core charge applies. AGM or EFB compatibility must follow the vehicle specification; a cheaper unsuitable battery is not a like-for-like alternative.
Illustrative price breakdown
Suppose a compatible battery is $180, fitting is $45 and registration is $30: the subtotal is $255 before any additional tax or refundable core deposit. These are invented figures showing the calculation, not current market prices. Compare quotes using the same inclusions and the same vehicle details.
Test before buying
A flat battery may be discharged because of lights left on, a charging fault or an electrical drain. Ask whether the quote includes checking why it failed. Replacing a battery without resolving a drain can leave the new one flat too.
