Disconnect jumper cables in the reverse of the approved connection order, handling one clamp at a time. Keep loose clamps away from each other, vehicle metal and moving engine parts.
A common removal sequence
For the usual negative-ground setup: remove black from the assisted vehicle’s ground; remove black from donor negative; remove red from donor positive; remove red from assisted positive. Use this only if it reverses the procedure specified for the vehicles. Follow the manuals for whether engines and electrical loads should be on during removal.
Position yourself before removing a clamp
Find the cable route and the fan and belt area before reaching in. Electric fans may start unexpectedly. Hold the insulated part of the clamp and move it directly to a clear position. Do not drape a cable across the engine or allow a loose red clamp to touch the body.
Finish the job
Replace terminal covers and put leads away after checking their condition. If a battery warning stays on, the engine stops again or the battery becomes hot, seek assistance. Do not assume a short idle period has restored the battery’s full charge.
