Synthetic oil does not create a universal longer service interval. The engine maker’s approval, time limit and operating conditions still determine when the oil must be changed.
Read beyond the viscosity
Two oils labelled with the same viscosity may meet different manufacturer approvals. Confirm the approval required for your engine and emissions equipment. “Fully synthetic” on the bottle is not permission to double the distance between services.
Keep an interval record
Write down the service date and odometer, approved oil used, next maximum date and next maximum distance, plus any oil-life monitor instruction. If the car changes from long journeys to repeated short trips, check whether severe-use guidance applies. Reset an oil-life monitor only after the required service.
Low mileage still counts
A car that spends months making short trips can reach its time limit well before its distance limit. Colour alone is not a reliable test of remaining oil life. If the service history is missing, establish a documented baseline with a workshop rather than estimating from appearance.
