Lead generation is the process of attracting potential customers and giving them a useful way to express interest. A contact becomes actionable when you know what the person wants, whether your offer fits and what follow-up is appropriate.
What counts as a lead?
A quotation request, consultation booking or product enquiry can be a lead. A newsletter subscription signals a different level of interest. A name copied from a directory is a prospect record; it does not demonstrate that the person wants a sales conversation.
Write a definition before comparing channels. For a local installer, a qualified lead might mean a homeowner in the service area with a relevant installation request. For a software company, it might mean an organisation with a supported use case and someone willing to discuss requirements. These are working definitions, not universal standards.
A practical lead-generation process
- Choose a customer and problem. Identify who can benefit and what they need to decide.
- Offer a useful next step. Explain what a consultation, sample or quotation includes.
- Reach suitable people. Use search, referrals, events, relevant content or paid promotion.
- Collect necessary details. Ask enough to respond without turning the form into an interrogation.
- Validate and route. Remove spam and duplicates, then assign an owner.
- Respond and qualify. Confirm the need and agree a next step.
- Record the outcome. Track accepted enquiries, opportunities and customers.
Example: a kitchen renovation business
A fictional business publishes a guide to preparing for a kitchen renovation. Its page offers a planning call and asks for location, project type and approximate timing. A visitor requesting a repair outside its service area receives an honest explanation rather than an unsuitable sales pitch. A suitable renovation request reaches the person responsible for estimates.
Measure quality as well as volume
Report valid enquiries, qualification rate, response time and cost per qualified lead. Separate marketing costs from sales costs when calculating acquisition. More form submissions are not an improvement if most are duplicates or unsuitable requests. Review rejection reasons before buying more traffic.
