Insiders all know what PR is. It is the abbreviation for ‘public relations’ and is the process by which stakeholders obtain information about a brand or organization. In essence, the media are used to build a positive reputation for the organization. This is therefore different from marketing, where the organization itself presents the benefits to the customers.
It is therefore important to maintain good contacts with the media, such as newspapers, e-magazines, broadcasters, blogs, Facebook, etc. Through this PR process, you encourage a positive perception of the brand or organization. Those involved in this are the stakeholders, such as future customers, investors, employees, the general public, etc.
The fact is that every organization can use PR. PR is usually seen as a form of promotion for a brand or organization that provides services or physical deliveries. But technology companies can also use PR. Technology and digital companies can also use the media to build a positive reputation. To be more specific, this includes general reputation, innovation for stakeholders, attracting qualified candidates, and raising capital for investments.
In other words, PR is for every organization.
Types of technical PR
Press release
You are an entrepreneur running a tech organization and you want to put the organization on the map. A press release in the major media can give this a huge boost. However, that press release must have significant news value. The press release must genuinely present a new product, service, or innovative idea. That has the greatest appeal. A good, newsworthy story with the key facts in the introduction; keep it concise and ensure it is highly informative. And don’t be too modest.
But now you don’t have a grand story for a press release in the major media, so what then? You can still issue a press release, but then to the media in the area where your organization is located, and thus use the local media.
If you have never written a press release before, you can find enough information on the internet to write one yourself.
Influencer
They are called Influencers for a reason. Their influence has grown considerably over the years. Because they have many followers, they can exert enormous influence on them. Their sphere of influence is primarily within the younger audience. So, select the influencer and/or blogger who has an affinity with your brand or organization and start a conversation. After all, they can promote your brand, organization, and posts. View the influencers and bloggers as your customers as well. Let them act as judges of your brand. That strengthens their position with the followers, so take good care of them.
Be aware that there are influencers who charge fees for expressing their opinions on their platform. In that case, ensure you have a solid underlying contract.
And if you were to doubt the reachability of their opinion, research has shown that it is 11 times higher than with traditional forms of marketing.
Crisis Management PR
Even as a tech company, you may face crisis management. Usually, organizations do not have a crisis management procedure in place. Yet, it forms an important part of overall management. Hopefully, it will never be needed, but if it is, it can be a matter of life and death.
A crisis can have a serious impact on the organization. Examples of crises include mismanagement, misconduct, product defects, legal issues, etc. It is best to hire highly specialized professionals for this. They have the experience to resolve the crisis or limit the damage.
As the name suggests, crisis management is a form of PR carried out to try to minimize the damage of a negative event.
Thought leadership
Thought leadership means intellectual leadership. It is a form of content marketing in which a person, brand, company, or platform grows into an authority within one specific domain. This results in societal relevance.
Thought leaders are essentially the influencers of the business world. Experts in their field, their trusted opinions command respect, and they possess a large network. Incidentally, you do not necessarily need to hold an important position in a global organization. The most important thing is that you have something interesting to say.
In technological leadership, writing articles will involve solving a technical problem. As a thought leader, you might consider writing this yourself. After all, you possess all the necessary skills. Should you have any doubts, engage a PT team.
Business Communication
Communication within your tech company is typically internally focused at many levels. Tech companies do not always have outward-facing communication. This internally focused communication should actually lay the foundation for external communication. Your own employees are, first and foremost, the greatest investment and, through internalization, should be the best ambassadors, especially those in direct contact with customers.
Provide employees with up-to-date information through conversations, meetings, emails, e-magazines, etc. Do not elaborate too much. It should be short, concise, and clear. And always provide the opportunity for reflection.
