An AirTag is Apple’s small item tracker for keys, bags and other
belongings. It broadcasts an encrypted Bluetooth signal that nearby
Apple devices can detect and relay to Apple’s Find My network. The owner
sees an approximate location in the Find My app; compatible iPhones can
also guide the user toward a nearby tag.
Does an AirTag contain GPS?
No. AirTag does not calculate its own position with GPS and does not
have a normal cellular subscription. Its remote location depends on
nearby devices in the Find My network detecting the Bluetooth signal and
securely reporting a location.
That distinction matters. In a busy city, updates may arrive
frequently. In an isolated area without participating Apple devices, the
last known location can remain unchanged.
How does the Find My network
work?
Nearby Apple devices detect the rotating Bluetooth identifier and
send encrypted location information through the network. Apple describes
the process as anonymous and encrypted, with the owner’s devices able to
retrieve the result.
The person whose device relays the signal does not need to open an
app or know that the tag is nearby. Find My network settings and
participation depend on the device and current Apple software.
What is Precision Finding?
On compatible iPhones, Precision Finding can combine Ultra Wideband
technology with device sensors to show direction and distance when the
AirTag is nearby. Availability depends on the iPhone model, region and
current software.
If Precision Finding is unavailable, the owner can view the map, play
a sound or use standard Find My directions. Walls, metal and
interference affect local detection.
What is the range of an
AirTag?
Apple does not define one guaranteed Bluetooth distance for every
environment. Local range changes with obstructions and radio conditions.
Remote finding is not limited to the owner’s Bluetooth range; it depends
on another Find My device passing near the item.
AirTag is therefore different from a true GPS tracker with a cellular
modem. It can be highly effective around people but cannot promise
scheduled location reports everywhere.
How long does the battery
last?
AirTag uses a replaceable CR2032 coin cell. Apple states that the
battery is designed to last more than a year under defined everyday-use
assumptions. Actual life depends on sound playback, Precision Finding
use, temperature and battery quality.
The Find My app warns when replacement is needed. Keep coin cells
away from children and follow battery safety instructions; some
bitter-coated cells may have contact issues in certain devices.
Can AirTag track a
stolen car or a pet?
AirTag is designed for belongings, not real-time vehicle security or
pet safety. Anti-stalking alerts and sound can reveal an unknown tag,
location updates are not guaranteed, and the device lacks a dedicated
live GPS connection.
For a vehicle or pet, compare a purpose-built GPS/cellular tracker
with an appropriate mount, subscription, battery and coverage. Do not
rely on an AirTag as the only recovery or safety measure.
What prevents unwanted
tracking?
Apple and Google support cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts. A
compatible phone can warn someone that an unknown tracker appears to be
moving with them. AirTag can also emit a sound after separation from its
owner, and the tag can be scanned for information and disabling
instructions.
These measures reduce misuse but do not make stalking impossible.
Anyone receiving an alert should follow the phone’s safety guidance and
contact local authorities when personal safety is at risk.
Is an AirTag waterproof?
AirTag has a water- and dust-resistance rating under specified
laboratory conditions, but resistance can decrease with wear. It is not
a diving tracker. Use a suitable holder and avoid relying on water
resistance for long immersion.
AirTag works best as a low-maintenance tracker for ordinary
belongings within Apple’s ecosystem. Its key strengths are the Find My
network and replaceable battery; its main limits are dependence on
nearby devices and lack of continuous GPS reporting.
