A floating shelf hides its support inside or behind the shelf. For a beginner, the most dependable route is a compatible shelf-and-bracket system with published dimensions and load limits, rather than an improvised hidden fixing.
Plan the shelf
List the contents and their weight, choose the depth and locate suitable support in the wall. A deeper shelf creates more leverage on the fixings. The shelf’s own weight counts too. Use a tested project plan or the bracket manufacturer’s specified timber thickness and fixing arrangement.
Build and install
- Confirm the wall substrate and check for concealed services.
- Cut or order the shelf to the system’s dimensions.
- Prepare bracket holes or the hollow shelf body exactly as the chosen plan requires.
- Sand and finish accessible surfaces, allowing the coating to cure.
- Mark level supports and fit the specified wall fasteners.
- Fit and secure the shelf, then check for movement before loading within its rating.
Kreg’s shelf project library offers project-specific plans. Select one matching your skill and tools; do not mix dimensions from unrelated designs.
Stop if the support is uncertain
A shelf is not verified by briefly hanging your weight on it. If the wall is unsuitable, fixings move or the load is unknown, obtain an appropriate installation solution. Heavy storage and shelves above beds deserve particular care.
