Lead sourcing identifies organisations or people who may fit your offer and checks the information needed for a relevant next step. It creates a research base; it does not by itself prove interest or permission to contact someone.
Where to look
- Your CRM: review appropriate existing relationships, unresolved enquiries and documented future projects.
- Referrals: ask for a relevant introduction rather than indiscriminate contact sharing.
- Events and professional communities: use the context and preferences established in the interaction.
- Company websites and directories: research business fit, location, services and public organisational information.
- Data providers: assess provenance, freshness, coverage and permitted use before acquiring data.
A small, useful sourcing record
Record the organisation, relevant problem or fit hypothesis, evidence URL, verification date, appropriate role, source and next action. Separate verified facts from assumptions. A company using a certain platform does not automatically have a problem with it.
Useful tools include a CRM for ownership and duplicate control, a spreadsheet for a bounded research exercise and verification tools for checking data quality. An email-verification result concerns deliverability; it does not establish a legal right to send marketing.
Check third-party data carefully
The European Commission explains that organisations supplying marketing contact data must demonstrate compliant collection and permitted use. Recipients must consider objections, transparency and applicable electronic-marketing rules. Public availability is not a blanket marketing permission. See the Commission’s explanation of third-party marketing data for the EU context; check the rules applicable to your country and channel.
Judge sources by verified fit
Sample a source before importing a large list. Check duplicates, outdated roles, irrelevant organisations and missing provenance. Track the share of researched records that become suitable conversations, not just the number collected. Delete or correct inaccurate information according to your data-management rules and respect recorded contact preferences.
