Drywall repair depends on whether the damage is a shallow dent, a small hole or a larger missing section. Deal with water damage, movement or hazardous old materials before treating the surface.
Choose the repair
- Small dent or screw hole: suitable filler may be enough after removing loose material.
- Small hole: use a compatible patch within its stated size range.
- Larger opening: a matching board patch needs proper support and joint treatment.
- Recurring crack: establish the cause rather than repeatedly covering it.
Surface-repair sequence
Protect the area, remove loose edges, fit the chosen patch system, apply compatible compound in thin layers, allow drying, smooth with dust control, then prime and paint. The USG repair guide provides illustrated methods for different damage types.
Checks that change the job
Before cutting, identify cables and pipes. Match board type and thickness; a fire-rated or acoustic assembly may require a specific repair method. Do not casually sand unknown old coatings or textured materials that may contain hazardous substances.
Use side lighting to reveal ridges before painting. A patch can be mechanically sound but still show because the texture or sheen differs; repainting to a natural boundary may be necessary. If the wall is damp, soft or moving, obtain an assessment before cosmetic repair.
