A marketing funnel groups the steps between discovering an offer and becoming a customer. A useful version includes awareness, consideration, decision, onboarding and retention. The funnel helps a team identify missing support and measure progression; it does not mean every buyer follows a fixed sequence.
Stages, examples and measures
| Stage | Reader question | Example support | Possible measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness | What is causing this problem? | An explanation of the problem and alternatives | Relevant audience reach |
| Consideration | Which approach fits? | A comparison or selection guide | Meaningful product evaluations |
| Decision | Can I trust this offer? | Pricing, proof and clear terms | Qualified requests or purchases |
| Onboarding | How do I get started? | Setup instructions and support | Completion of the first useful task |
| Retention | Is this still useful? | Service improvements and relevant follow-up | Renewals or repeat purchases |
A simple numerical example
Suppose one fictional campaign produces 1,000 relevant visits, 80 valid enquiries, 20 sales-accepted enquiries and five customers from those enquiries after the review period. The visit-to-enquiry rate is 8%; acceptance is 25% of enquiries; customer conversion is 25% of accepted enquiries. Overall, five customers from 1,000 visits is 0.5%.
Those percentages are descriptive, not industry targets. Define “relevant”, “valid” and “accepted”, remove duplicates and allow enough time for the same group to buy. Dividing this month’s sales by this month’s new enquiries can mix unrelated groups.
Find the missing answer
If enquiries are numerous but rarely suitable, inspect the promise and targeting. If suitable prospects stop after receiving a quotation, ask about cost, scope and confidence rather than automatically buying more traffic. If new customers leave during setup, review onboarding before increasing acquisition spending.
Keep supporting content accessible without forcing a reader through every stage. Someone arriving through a recommendation may want the price immediately. Another person may return to a basic explanation after a demonstration.
Build a usable funnel map
For each stage, record its entry event, exit event, responsible person and source of evidence. Draw the path through the real website, sales process and product. Mark steps you cannot observe instead of inventing a complete customer history. Review the bottleneck with the team that can change it.
