A useful packing list starts with items you cannot easily replace and adds clothing for the actual weather and activities. Use the checklist below as a base, then remove anything your trip does not need.
Documents, money and essentials
- Required travel documents and entry permissions.
- Tickets, accommodation address and key booking details.
- Payment methods and emergency contact information.
- Necessary medication in appropriate packaging, with required documentation checked for the destination.
- Glasses, contact-lens supplies or other daily essentials.
Clothing and footwear
Count days between laundry opportunities rather than automatically packing an outfit for every day. For a short trip, start with underwear and socks for each day, a small set of mix-and-match clothes, sleepwear, a weather layer and comfortable shoes. Add swimwear, activity-specific clothing or formalwear only for planned uses.
Toiletries and technology
- Toothbrush, toothpaste and the personal care items you use.
- Sun protection suitable for your destination and activities.
- Phone, charging lead and compatible plug adapter if needed.
- Any essential device and its accessories.
- A small reusable bag for laundry or daily outings.
Pack for the journey itself
Keep documents, necessary medication and one change of clothes accessible. Before flying, check your carrier and airport rules for bag dimensions, liquids, batteries and restricted items. Do not rely on a universal packing list for those changing rules.
The final check
- Look at the forecast and planned activities.
- Remove duplicate “just in case” items.
- Weigh and measure the finished bag.
- Confirm that essential items are not trapped in checked luggage.
- Leave space for items that will be repacked less neatly during the trip.
The list is complete only when it fits your trip, not when every possible box is ticked.
