Inspect a used car in daylight, check its identity and service history, and arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing. A clean appearance and a short test drive cannot reveal every defect.
Before the viewing
Match VIN and registration details to the car and documents. Review service invoices, inspection history, recalls, ownership claims and any finance or title issues through the appropriate local service. Ask for the engine to be cold when you arrive and clarify what warranty is actually offered.
At the vehicle
Look for uneven panel gaps, inconsistent paint, rust, damp carpets, leaks, tyre damage and uneven wear. Try lights, windows, climate controls, locks and seat belts. Confirm warning lights perform their normal start-up check and go out as specified. For an EV or PHEV, request battery-health information and check charging equipment and warranty terms.
Drive and decide
Only test-drive an insured, apparently safe vehicle with permission. Note braking, steering, gear changes, noises and vibration. Have unresolved findings assessed independently and price the required work. Refusal of an inspection, inconsistent identity or pressure to pay before checks are reasons to pause the purchase.
