Gallery wall frames look cohesive when one or two features repeat across the group. You can mix sizes and artwork while keeping a shared finish, mount colour or frame profile.
Choose a linking rule
- Same frame finish with different sizes for a restrained collection.
- Two finishes repeated several times for a more varied wall.
- Consistent mounts around different image sizes.
- One larger anchor frame with smaller companions that share a colour.
Measure the frame, not just the print
A frame sold for a 30 × 40 cm print has larger outer dimensions. Record those measurements for layout planning. Check mount openings so they do not hide important details or leave unwanted borders.
Compare practical details
Glazing affects reflections and total weight. Ask about conservation materials and light protection for valuable or irreplaceable work. Avoid assuming every inexpensive “archival” claim describes the whole frame assembly.
Check how the frame hangs: wire, one hook and two fixed points require different marks. Choose wall fixings for the loaded frame weight and the wall substrate. A uniform appearance does not mean every frame uses the same anchor.
Buy a sample combination
Place two or three proposed frames beside the actual artwork and room finishes. Inspect in daytime and evening light. Reusing sound frames may be enough; replace damaged fittings before hanging.
