Organise a kitchen pantry around the meals you cook and the products that need using first. Measure and sort before buying storage bins.
Empty one shelf and check it
Group unopened packs, opened ingredients, snacks and baking supplies. Check labels and signs of pests or damage. Clean the empty shelf and let it dry. Keep food separate from household chemicals.
Create useful zones
- Daily ingredients at easy reach.
- Heavy jars where they can be lifted securely.
- Backstock behind or separately from the open packet.
- A visible use-first area for suitable items approaching their recommended limit.
- Occasional equipment above, within safe shelf loads.
Label what would otherwise be lost
If transferring food, use food-safe containers and retain ingredients, allergen information, date and preparation instructions. Do not keep topping up a container indefinitely; empty and clean it appropriately between batches.
Make the system maintain itself
Put newer purchases behind older suitable stock, note shortages before shopping and check the use-first area when planning meals. A deep shelf may need a pull-out bin; a shallow shelf may work better without one.
Test the arrangement for a week. If a category is always left on the counter, move its storage closer or make access easier. The aim is finding and using food, not matching every container.
